All About Signatures

Signatures are book pages printed onto one single large sheet, then folded in halves to make up multiple pages of a book, rather than printing and trimming a stack of individual and loose sheets. Except in the case where tabs, short pages, or varying paper stocks are involved, it is more economical to provide signatures for binding than it is to ship individual pages.

Please note:

• In most cases, printers are able to fold signatures faster and more economically than trimming individual pages.
• When signatures are used, pages should always be perforated. Perforation along the folds allows air to escape, making the stack of signatures more manageable for shipping and facilitates the most accurate trim.
